The Best Choice for Visiting: GIS.FCU

GIS.FCU is prestigious in GIS field, and always the best choice to visit for many organizations. GIS is also the visiting priority among the units in Feng Chia University. Seven organizations visited GIS.FCU during these two weeks. Most of the visitors are from China and other foreign countries including RICS (Malaysia). Total number of the visitors reaches 223. All the guests praised the technology and various research achievements that GIS achieved. They think GIS.FCU is a good model for their country and wish to apply these achievements on their working field.

2012 International Geospatial Interoperability Forum

2012 International Geospatial Interoperability Forum was held on Dec. 15, 2012 in Feng Chia University. The organizers are Information Center and National Land Surveying and Mapping Center, Ministry of Interior, as well as GIS Research Center, FCU. The forum focused on subjects, such as Open Standards, Geospatial Interoperability, Geospatial Cloud Computing and BIM. All of attendees from government units, academia and private sectors would be reached the development and trend of geospatial standards through this forum.

TURAS Project-
Develop a Geospatial Information Platform for Sustainable Intelligent Cities with Europe Allies

Rapid growth of urban population brings lots of challenges to the management system of cities and also disturbs wild-life habits close by. It becomes more important than ever to manage and plan a city more in more efficiency and sustainable way. 16 European cities lunched a five-year research project, TURAS (Transitioning towards urban resilience and sustainability) in November, 2011. The project brings together researchers with local authorities and citizens to work out new approaches to urban environmental challenges. GIS.FCU is the first Asia partner, who joined the TURAS project in July, 2012.

GIS.FCU Participated in The Ninth Plenary Session of The Group on Earth Observations (GEO-IX) in Brazil

Prof. Jimmy Chou, the director of GIS, Asst. Prof Lan Kun(Peter) Chung and Asst. Pi Hui (Pinky) Huang participated in the Ninth Plenary Session of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO-IX), which was scheduled in Foz do Iguaçu, PR, Brazil, on Nov. 22-23,2012. Prof. Chung and Prof. Huang gave presentations about the achievement of working group of GEOSS AIP-5 disaster management at this meeting.
In addition, Feng Chia University team met with GEO President Barbara Ryan and GEO Commission Vice-President of the U.S. delegation, who aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1984 as a female astronaut. Feng Chia University team also instructs Taiwan’s contribution, and also hopes to contribute the experience to the international community.

GIS.FCU Participated in The 8th International Cadastral Symposium

The 8th International Cadastral Symposium was holed at Sapporo City, Japan on Oct. 18-19. There were three staffs from GIS.FCU included Director Chou attended the symposium, which included 18 formal seminars for the papers representation and a meeting held by international cadastral association. The Director of GIS Center Prof. Tine-Yin Chou presented the UAV technology applied on the collection for disaster information and some application for cadastral field.

ICG-TEK 2012 Annual Conference

Among all exciting activities, Korea Research Institute of Human Settlement (KRIHS) also held an annual conference “ International Conference on sharing Geospatial Technology, Experience and Knowledge 2012 (ICG-TCK 2012) “. Speakers from Korea, Japan, China, Australia, and Taiwan were invited to present as keynote speeches. Dr. Chou as Taiwan delegate reported a presentation titled “National GIS Strategic Development toward Geospatial Interoperability Application in Taiwan”.

The first regular meeting of OGC Asia Forum held on 10th October since it was initiated in the 77th OGC TC Meeting in Taiwan. About 20 delegates come from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Australia, and New Zealand participated the forum. Dr. Chou as the current OCG Asia Forum Chair also moderated first formal OGC Asia Forum session and introduced some of the OGC activities among Asia Pacific regions/countries delegates.

Smart Geospatial Expo 2012

The Geographic Information Systems Research Center of Feng Chia University (GIS.FCU) Taiwan first attended the Smart Geospatial Expo 2012 in Seoul, South Korea. There were about 150 participants from various fields, and 360 exhibition booths at the Expo, implying the rigorous rising of geospatial industries. The portable unit for debris flow monitoring and the advanced UAV, all developed by GIS.FCU, had been demonstrated in the Expo to show the best practice of OGC SWE (Sensor Web Enablement) on disaster prevention and response.

Smart Geospatial Expo 2012 GIS.FCU attend OGC TC/PC meetings and Smart Geospatial Expo 2012

On the second week of Oct. 2012, Director Jimmy Chou with six Division Managers of GIS.FCU went to Seoul to attend Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Tech. Committee (TC) and Planning Committee (PC) meetings and had presentations. During the OGC TC/PC meetings week, one of the largest local surveying and GIS application exhibition which called “Smart Geospatial Expo 2012” showed the innovation and energizing activities. GIS.FCU was also invited to provide the OGC standards application exhibition booth as one of the major OGC members. GIS.FCU successfully demonstrated the Unmanned Aviation Vehicle (UAV) model, Mobile Monitoring vehicle model, and Portable Unit (PU).
